On August 17, 1945, at 3:00 a.m., Sukarno, Mohammad Hatta, Soebarjo, and Sayuti Melik went to Admiral Maeda's house to type the proclamation text because Japan had given the green light for Indonesian independence. At that time, the typewriter at Admiral Maeda's house used Kanji/Japanese characters. At that moment, they were confused and said, "Wow, what are you using to type the proclamation? This typewriter is nonsense." Somehow, and no matter how crazy the situation was, Dr. Hermann Kandeler, a Kriegsmarine/Nazi German Navy officer, was still awake and learned that they didn't have a usable typewriter. Because Admiral Maeda's house and Dr. Hermann Kandeler's residence were neighbors, Admiral Maeda's servant was summoned and, on his orders, lent him his typewriter, which used Latin characters. This history was hidden because Indonesia wanted no affiliation with Nazi Germany.
